Google Bard has reached its conclusion. Just about a year following its initial launch, aimed at competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in a swift move, the brand is undergoing a transformation. Bard will now be known as Gemini, aligning with the company’s suite of foundational models. Significantly, this rebranding coincides with the introduction of Gemini Ultra, the latest and most advanced large language model to date.

Gemini Ultra introduces a premium model, with access provided via a new $20 Google One tier. This tier not only unlocks Gemini Ultra but also includes a generous 2TB of storage along with the full suite of Google One features. Subscribers will benefit from an initial two-month free trial, extending the value of this package. Additionally, this tier grants integration of Gemini into Google Workspace applications, including Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Meet, enhancing productivity and collaboration tools with advanced AI capabilities. Concurrently, Google plans to phase out the Duet AI brand, previously limited to AI functionalities within Workspace, and integrate these features under the Gemini umbrella, streamlining its AI offerings.

The company is expanding its offerings by introducing a dedicated Gemini application for Android devices, and integrating Gemini into the Google app on iOS platforms. Android users are provided with an additional feature, the option to substitute Google Assistant with Gemini, enhancing the assistant experience with Gemini’s capabilities. Google has also indicated that developers interested in API access to the Ultra model can expect further details in the upcoming weeks, signaling expanded opportunities for integration and development.

Gemini Advanced is set to be accessible in over 150 countries and territories, initially supporting only English. However, the company has plans to incorporate additional languages into the service, with Japanese and Korean identified as forthcoming additions to the language roster, demonstrating the company’s commitment to broadening its linguistic support and global reach.

Gemini Ultra 1.0: A New Chapter

At the outset, Google’s unveiling of the Gemini suite primarily spotlighted the Gemini Pro model, which was made accessible through Bart. According to Google, Gemini Pro’s performance was comparable to GPT-3.5. However, with the broader availability of GPT-4, the initial buzz around Gemini Pro seemed somewhat subdued. Google had hinted at a more advanced offering, Gemini Ultra, slated for a consumer release in early 2024 following a series of private beta tests. Although not explicitly stated, it was widely anticipated that Gemini Ultra would be a premium offering. Initially referred to as Bart Advanced, this premium tier has since been rebranded to Gemini Advanced, aligning with the suite’s flagship model.

“Gemini Ultra 1.0 redefines excellence, establishing new standards in a broad spectrum of benchmarks, including text, image, audio, and video,” stated Google’s Sissie Hasiao during a press briefing preceding today’s unveiling. “For Google, Gemini transcends the models themselves; it signifies a paradigm shift in our approach to cutting-edge technology and the comprehensive ecosystem we’re developing around it. This spans from consumer products that impact billions of users to the APIs and platforms that empower developers and businesses to drive innovation.”

Hasiao further explained that the decision to rebrand Bard as Gemini was made to better represent the integration of Google’s most sophisticated technology at its core. She humorously speculated that, should Google choose to introduce an even more advanced model in the future and name it something like Aries, instead of continuing with extended names like Gemini Ultra Super Pro Max 3.0, it would present an interesting branding challenge for what was formerly known as Bard. Despite Google’s promotion of Bard’s positive reception among users, it’s acknowledged that the initial lackluster performance may have deterred some early adopters, making a rebranding strategy somewhat imperative to refresh and realign the product’s image with its enhanced capabilities.

Bard’s transition to Gemini Pro means that regular users will not experience significant changes. However, subscribers to Gemini Advanced will gain exclusive access to the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model. The true prowess of Gemini Ultra 1.0 remains to be seen through hands-on experience, as Google maintained a level of ambiguity regarding its full capabilities at this week’s press briefing.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.“Subscribing to Gemini Advanced unlocks the Ultra 1.0 model, significantly enhancing its proficiency in handling intricate tasks across diverse fields such as coding, logical analysis, intricate instruction compliance, and creative teamwork, to name a few,” Hasiao elucidated. “Gemini Advanced not only accommodates more extensive prompts but also exhibits a heightened ability to grasp the context of preceding prompts for a more coherent interaction.” It’s important to highlight that Gemini Ultra 1.0 is a multi-modal model, enabling discussions around various content types, including images, thereby broadening the scope of conversational engagement.

Gemini Advanced Overview

Gemini Advanced stands as the exclusive gateway to the Ultra 1.0 model. To access this advanced capability, users are required to subscribe to the newly introduced $20 Google One AI Premium plan. This comprehensive plan amalgamates all the perks of the conventional Google One Premium offering, including 2TB of cloud storage, premium editing features in Google Photos, advanced video capabilities in Google Meet, and sophisticated appointment scheduling in Google Calendar. Beyond these features, subscribers gain entry to the Ultra 1.0 model across all platforms where Gemini is integrated. An upcoming feature will extend Gemini’s functionalities into Google Workspace, promising an experience akin to Microsoft Copilot, though specific details remain under wraps for now.

The standard rate for access to cutting-edge AI chat functionalities, such as those offered by ChatGPT, is generally around $20 per month. Google holds a competitive edge in this arena by its ability to augment these AI services with extra features at minimal additional expense, thanks in part to the likely significant profit margins on its existing Google One storage plans. An added perk worth mentioning is that existing Google One subscribers are not left out; they too are eligible for the complimentary two-month trial upon upgrading to the new AI Premium plan, enhancing the value proposition for loyal customers.
