As for this week, the spotlight shines on Okta. This identity company is seizing the moment, making a series of AI-related announcements during its Oktane customer conference, currently underway in San Francisco.

Todd McKinnon, Okta’s CEO, shared his perspective on this wave of change, remarking, ‘I firmly believe that AI represents the next major technological wave—an epoch as significant and far-reaching as the advent of the internet, cloud computing, and mobile technology.'”

For Okta, this entails leveraging the extensive data it has amassed on identity-related information to enhance customer safety. Todd McKinnon elaborated on their new initiatives, referred to as “Okta AI,” which involve harnessing the wealth of valuable data accrued from risk signals, usage patterns, customer insights, and policies, and fusing it with cutting-edge AI technology.

McKinnon clarifies that Okta AI isn’t a standalone product; rather, it’s a suite of capabilities slated for gradual integration across the platform. Among these capabilities are predictive AI elements aimed at assisting security teams in identifying potential threats. Additionally, it encompasses features that enable users to engage with data more intuitively, leveraging generative AI for streamlined problem identification.

While this multifaceted approach encompasses several components, Todd McKinnon highlighted three key aspects. The first of these is Identity Threat Protection, which extends beyond conventional identity verification. It delves into various factors such as the user’s device, network, location, and additional contextual clues to ensure the authenticity of the sign-in process. However, it doesn’t conclude its assessment there.

“With Identity Threat Protection and Okta AI, security evaluation remains an ongoing process. It continually receives signals from the entire ecosystem, including inputs from sources like CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler, and others. This integration is coupled with identity fraud protection. The moment any form of risk emerges, be it device malware or compromised network security, it can promptly identify and respond,” explained McKinnon.



Furthermore, if it detects any activity surpassing a predefined threat threshold, irrespective of the system of origin, whether Okta’s or one of its partner’s, it initiates what Todd McKinnon refers to as a ‘universal logout.’ This security measure involves logging the user out of every system until the security concerns have been resolved.

Moving on, Policy Recommender, takes a proactive approach to application security configuration. It draws insights from similar use cases across Okta’s extensive customer base, which comprises over 18,000 clients. McKinnon emphasized the importance of achieving the right balance between user-friendliness and security, particularly for sensitive applications.

He elaborated, “Policy Recommender undergoes training using the policies of thousands of customers and their app configurations.” Leveraging this extensive data, the system then provides tailored policy recommendations to individual customers, aligning with their unique requirements and security posture.

Lastly, the Log Analyzer represents a purer form of generative AI, offering users the ability to query Okta’s logs using natural language to retrieve information. Todd McKinnon elaborated on the technology, explaining, “The foundation of this technology lies in a generative model that analyzes all the queries users pose to the Okta logs.” It then undergoes training on these queries. As a result, it provides a natural language interface, allowing customers to ask questions in plain language. The Okta system, in turn, responds with answers drawn from the data stored in their logs.

McKinnon reveals that the company employs a blend of models, selecting the most suitable one for each specific task. This mix encompasses models from various providers, including Google, OpenAI, and Amazon. He also hints at the possibility of Okta crafting its own model down the road, possibly rooted in open source solutions.

Ray Wang, the founder and principal analyst at Constellation Research, envisions an ongoing security battleground where both adversaries leverage AI to gain the upper hand. In this evolving landscape, security and identity firms like Okta find themselves compelled to embrace AI technologies, recognizing it as a necessity rather than an option.

“Customers understand that the future will witness AI-versus-AI battles. This marks just the inception, and they anticipate their identity providers to not only withstand attacks from other AI systems but also proactively prepare for them,” Wang said.

Okta’s trajectory undoubtedly propels it into this AI-driven landscape. However, its success will be measured by the effective execution of these concepts, all while maintaining stringent customer privacy protection measures. As of now, these newly unveiled AI features and more are slated for beta testing in the forthcoming months, with a general release expected sometime in the next year.
